Gukje Yangyukgwan

국제양육관 A lamb-skewer and grill house in Cheongju that also cooks a full Chinese menu, with braziers that turn the skewers for you.

Data as of · Published ·

Gukje Yangyukgwan grills lamb on the ground floor of a building in the eating lane of Jiwell City in Bokdae-dong, Cheongju, across from a middle school. The registered name carries a space; the sign and the customers close it up. It bills itself as LAMB BBQ x AMERICAN CHINESE, putting skewers and chops on the same list as sweet-and-sour pork, chilli chicken, mala soup and stir-fried aubergine. Skewers come ten to a portion in five seasonings — plain, house, mala, teriyaki, curry — all the same price, and a portion can be split five and five. The skewers go on a motorised grill that turns them for you. Five in the evening until two in the morning. The posts we read run from December 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. One blogger wrote up the same visit twice, differently. In a standalone review posted on 7 August she calls the lamb tender and springy with no off smell, and signs off recommending it twice over. In her own month-of-August diary, posted on 3 September and running through a dozen places, the same meal gets one line: it was so-so, maybe she had expected too much, and next time she will try the hot one. That line is the only lukewarm sentence in twenty-nine posts. We counted both.
  2. You do not have to turn the skewers. The brazier rotates by motor, so they cook evenly on their own. Ten writers mention it: no work, something to watch, and — the reason most often given — you can keep drinking and talking instead of tending the fire. Four add that the charcoal runs hot and things cook fast. One writer's fattier skewers caught fire.
  3. The smell of the lamb is what these writers talk about most. Seventeen say there is no muttony edge to it, and several of them say so after first declaring themselves sensitive to it — one cannot eat lamb if it is even slightly strong, another remembers places where it was. Three were eating lamb for the first time, and one says this is where she learned to like chops. Nobody reports a smell.
  4. Twenty writers call the room big — it is the most repeated observation about this place. Four-tops across the floor, another section behind a half-wall, and tables that push together for a party. Two say they can book up to fifty-two people. The word for a work dinner appears in twenty-three posts, and six describe one going on at the next table; one writer records the toasts being called. Another thinks it would suit the staff of the chip and electronics plants nearby.
  5. Three things come free, and you fetch more yourself. Seventeen writers list them: pickled mustard stem, roasted peanuts, onions in soy. Fourteen note you can refill all three from the self-service bar without asking, where the small plates, aprons and gloves also live. Five say the pickled onion is what cuts the fat. One found a separate hot sauce there; three finish with a jelly sweet from a bowl by the till. More than ten describe the cumin, salt and chilli set out on every table to mix in your own dish.

Parking

6 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot6 of 29 posts

There is no car park. Fourteen posts carry a line pointing at the public car park at the district health centre, but only six writers say they actually used it. Two put it three minutes' walk away, one says five, and one says it is free. Another parks on the open ground by the sports centre. One writer's verdict — parking is genuinely bad, take a taxi or the bus — comes with two stars out of five. Nobody writes how many cars fit, or whether it is open late.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 4 (of 29 posts read)
Toilet inside6 of 29 posts
Separate restrooms2 of 29 posts

It is on the ground floor. Four writers say so in their own words — on the ground floor of the building, easy to find because of it. Whether there are steps, and what kind of door it is, nobody says.

Nobody looked at the doorway. In twenty-nine posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, step and ramp never appear. Four say the shop is on the ground floor, and one calls it an enormous ground-floor room, but not one describes what the entrance looks like. We do not know whether you can get in — not that you cannot, but that no one wrote it down.

The toilets are inside. Six writers saw them and said so, two of them noting separate rooms for men and women. Two remark on how well kept they are — one says that alone would satisfy her, given how bars usually manage it — and one scores them four out of five. Two other posts list separate toilets alongside wi-fi and contactless payment; that is the amenity list off the map listing, so we left it out. Whether there is an accessible stall, and how many cubicles there are, nobody writes.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Almost all of these posts arrived in one three-month burst. Of the thirty we collected, twenty-four were published between late July and September 2026; before that there are two from December 2025 and one each from January and February. Not one declares a sponsorship — two say they paid, one was a company dinner, and the remaining twenty-six say nothing. Eleven repeat, word for word, a line about five-layer skewers cut from the belly-rib and shoulder of lambs under a year old; two of them admit they are copying a notice on the wall. That is the shop's claim, not an observation, so we did not count it. One post we dropped from the denominator entirely: it gives the address as "somewhere in Bokdae-dong (please check before visiting)" and never says what was ordered or what it cost.
  • Exactly one writer says anything about getting here without a car, and all he says is that parking is bad so you should take a taxi or public transport — no route, no stop. One other walked ten minutes from her hotel, which tells you about her hotel. In twenty-nine posts there is no bus number, no station, no walk in minutes. Whether transit serves it we cannot say.
  • Whether you wait is not agreed. One writer says people kept coming in and you have to queue unless you book. Another, in at seven on a weekday, says there was no queue but more people than she expected. Six booked and walked straight in, and three of those note that a reservation gets the table and the charcoal set up before you arrive — one had picked her food at the same time and found the skewers already waiting. Nobody says whether there is anywhere to wait, or whether names are taken.
  • They disagree about the money — but not about the skewers. Sixteen posts put ten skewers at ₩16,000, and a December 2025 post gives the same figure as a September 2026 one. What splits them is whether the place is expensive. One blogger writes in both of his posts that it costs more than elsewhere and is worth it; another was startled to spend ₩90,000 on dinner and drinks for two. Four say the opposite — ₩16,000 for ten skewers is a bargain, the bill was not frightening. The side dishes really do vary: the aubergine at ₩20,000 and ₩21,000, the sweet-and-sour pork at ₩18,000 and ₩20,000, the fried rice at ₩7,000 and ₩8,000.
  • Twenty-nine posts, twenty-seven people. Two writers posted twice. One went twice in three days at the end of December 2025 and split it into a skewers piece and a chops-and-crayfish piece; the other is the pair described above. Two posts record something given free: one party who had ordered a lot were sent a plate of smashed cucumber, and two note that a photo review on the map app earns a pineapple sorbet. A sweetener for writing a review is a price paid for the writing, and it belongs in any reading of this shop's posts.
  • The number in the posts is not the number in our records. All fifteen posts that give a phone number give the same one — 0507-1309-3078 — and the shop's own Instagram uses it too. The number on the food-business licence is 043-234-7825. The 0507 prefix is a forwarding number the map service issues, and it stops working if the shop drops that service, so we publish the direct line from the licence and record the other one here. Which of the two is answered today we have not checked.
