Tongryeongae

통령애 Tongryeong is a Korean word for a commander or chief and ae can mean love; none of the posts explain the name.

Compiled from 19 blog posts read in fullSources →

A Korean-style drinking spot on the second floor of a converted house, one block back from Gwangalli Beach, serving boiled oxtail, beef tendon and cold shank plates with soju from 6 p.m. until late. The current signature is oxtail and tendon (39,000 won), served with broth and noodles. The bar was well known near Kyungsung University before moving here at the end of 2024, and it overhauled its menu in spring 2025. We read 22 posts dated November 2024 to August 2026; 19 describe an actual visit (December 2024 to August 2025).

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Sixteen posts describe the free opener: tofu shallow-fried until crisp, with stir-fried kimchi. One was warned it was too hot to bite straight away, and several started drinking on it before the mains arrived.
  2. Six posts call the room small: roughly five four-person tables, a six-seat group table at the back and a bar counter by the door. One post says there are clearly fewer tables than at the old shop; on another night a party of seven left one table free.
  3. Seven posts mention generous portions — the oxtail plate, the tendon plate, the pork cutlet and the porridge.
  4. Four posts mention a full-length window; two watched the Gwangalli drone show through it from their seats. Another notes it is not a true ocean view.

  1. Eight posts call the staff kind, citing a hair tie handed over, extra broth when the pot reduced, and a branded candy at the door.

Getting inside

Second floor12 of 19 posts
Toilet inside1 of 19 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 2 (of 19 posts read)

The bar is upstairs: twelve posts describe climbing to the second floor, and two nearly walked into the different bar on the ground floor. One said the entrance was hard to find.

Posts agree the bar is on the second floor; none mention any basement or ground-floor seating.

Several posts describe taking stairs to the second floor, but none mention an elevator, a step at the door, or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller. We don't know.

Two posts say there is a single unisex toilet, one placing it inside the bar and the other finding it clean. No other post mentions the toilet.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 20 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The bar moved here: eleven posts say it came from the Kyungsung University/Daeyeon-dong area (one says Namcheon-dong), and a post from 31 December 2024 found it still in soft opening. The menu changed too — January–February 2025 posts list shank-and-tendon at 34,000 won and winter oyster dishes, while posts from April on center on oxtail-and-tendon at 39,000 won and cold shank at 32,000 won.
  • Only one post mentions waiting: about 15 minutes on a public-holiday evening, seated on chairs downstairs. The other visits say nothing about waiting, which does not mean there is never a wait.
  • Two posts give directions by subway: 13–15 minutes (about 1 km) on foot from Gwangan Station exit 1. Nobody mentions buses.
  • Many posts repeat that small and medium dogs are allowed, but this is the house's notice; no post describes bringing a dog.
  • Sixteen posts list opening hours, all copied from the listing: 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., last order 1 a.m. Fourteen say closed Sundays; one says Mondays.
  • Opinions on price split: one post called it great value for the portions, another said quality had slipped and the prices were shameless. Only one post totals its bill: 49,000 won for the oxtail plate and a taster of cold pork.
  • Many posts give the phone number 0507-1325-3203; one post confirms Naver booking works, the rest copy it from the listing.
