Seonchang Hoetjip

선창횟집 A live-fish restaurant at the Mipo jetty, open since 1985, where every meal is a set course and a window seat looks out over Haeundae beach.

Data as of · Published ·

Seonchang is a live-fish restaurant at the Mipo jetty, the east end of Haeundae beach. Four posts date it to 1985 on this spot. Not one of the eighteen visitors ordered a single dish — every one of them took a set course for one. There are four tiers, fifty to a hundred and fifty thousand won, and the posts agree that wild fish and more shellfish begin at the second. A meal runs from the shellfish starters through the main plate of raw fish, a bowl of chilled fish soup, fried prawn and sweet potato, braised fish in a spiced sauce, abalone porridge and seaweed soup, and ends with a choice: the spicy stew or the clear one. Rice is extra. Tables are on the ground floor and the rooms above; a window seat looks out over the water. Eleven in the morning until half past ten at night, closed for an hour from half past three. The posts we read run from October 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. What this place costs is really a question of which tier you pick. All eighteen took a course; nobody ordered à la carte. The posts agree on what separates the four: wild fish from the second, striped beakfish from the third, and a prized flatfish at the top. And yet nobody has eaten the top one — the writer who ordered it for two, wanting that fish, was told by the owner it would be too much food and moved down a tier. The verdict on price tracks the tier. Those who took the ₩70,000 course call it fair — one, who has found Busan raw-fish houses expensive, says so outright. The grumbling comes from the ₩100,000 table: so-so for the money, not what you'd call reasonable. Even that writer allows that eating raw fish with the sea in front of you changes the sum. One post flags that the bowl of rice is extra, and three ordered one anyway, to go with the braised fish or the stew.
  2. Eight posts talk about the window, and no two had the same luck with it. Those who got a seat there describe Haeundae opening out in front of them, and a table of people saying so out loud. Others did not: one could not book in time, sat elsewhere, and says it made no difference to the meal; another had hoped for the window and counts simply being seated as luck. One post advises asking for a sea view when you ring to book. Two things get in the way of it. On summer afternoons the blinds come down against the glare — one writer was told so, and asked permission to lift them for a photograph. And after dark, as another notes flatly, there is nothing to see. One more came on the day of a typhoon.
  3. Seven posts mention a private room, and five of them say why it mattered. One family came looking for exactly that: space for a crowd, something the children would eat, and a room where the family could talk without an audience. Another booked one ahead for a birthday. The rooms are kept apart from the tables, which the posts like for a group; one writer puts it simply, that in a room she did not have to think about anyone else. One notes a floor-seated room as well. Four parties brought children, and there is no children's menu — two ordered a grilled rockfish for them instead, which one records comes as a set with seaweed soup, stir-fried fishcake and rice.
  4. Five posts talk about the staff, and the three kind words and the two complaints are not about the same thing. One of the three says the serving staff are foreign and every one of them was kind and good-natured; another found them attentive enough that she would bring her parents. The two complaints diverge. One writer found the serving staff all Southeast Asian and the language a barrier. The other is about the telephone: she left something behind, rang to ask after it, and did not find the response warm — and she notes that because the food, the room and the view had all pleased her, the call stayed with her the more. A third account points at thin staffing rather than manner: she stood waiting because nobody had cleared a table, everyone being out on the floor. Kind and hard to talk to, in the same house — and we have not tried to decide which one is current.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is modeum hwareo-hoe (모듬 활어회 (코스 메인)) — 15 of 17 posts.

Parking

3 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park3 of 17 posts

"Parking available, valet available" runs through the header blocks, and almost nobody describes actually parking. Five posts carry that line alongside the phone number and the opening hours, and two of those writers came by taxi. Not one person records handing over a key to a valet. Of the three accounts we kept, the fullest is a writer who looked and counted: parking on the ground floor of the building, six cars or so, with her own question mark. One other saw that a car park exists but walked over from her hotel; a third says only that the ground floor takes cars. Whether six is the right number, or whether there is room on a summer weekend, we do not know.

Getting inside

Second floor2 of 17 posts
Lift to the floor1 of 17 posts
Step-free access1 of 17 posts
Toilet inside1 of 17 posts

Only two posts say anything about floors. One puts the tables on the ground floor and the rooms above; the other ate on the first floor and notes there is seating on the second as well. Both take it for granted that you walk in at street level, but those two are all we have. Seven writers mention a private room and not one says which floor it was on — one gives a room number, which may or may not mean a floor. Of stairs and a lift, a single post mentions a lift.

Nobody writes about a step at the door or a ramp. One post alone touches on getting in, and what it says is this: there is a lift, there are high chairs, there are rooms and there are tables, so anyone can come comfortably, including someone who has trouble moving. The lift that writer saw with her own eyes. The rest is an inference from the lift, not an account of wheeling anything through the door. Whether there is a threshold, how wide the doorway is, whether there is an accessible toilet — none of the eighteen says. "Yes" and "we don't know" are not the same thing; if a wheelchair or a pushchair is coming, ring and ask.

One writer describes the toilet from having seen it — she gives it its own heading and says there is a clean one inside the restaurant. A second post lists "toilet: inside, men's and women's separate" — but it sits in a header block with the phone number and "parking available", and we cannot tell a copied listing from a thing observed. That same writer arrived by taxi, so the parking line in her block was certainly not hers. Whether the toilets are separate, how many stalls, whether there is an accessible one: nobody says.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 21 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Nobody writes about getting here without a car. Not one post mentions a bus or the subway. Four record how they arrived at all: a taxi from Busan station, a taxi from a nearby guesthouse, a ten-minute walk along the water from the LCT towers, and a walk out from Haeundae beach itself. Two mention the beach train and the sky capsule, but only to place the restaurant near the Mipo stop — neither rode one to get here. What the walk from Haeundae station is like, or how long it takes, is nowhere in the eighteen.
  • One writer waited and one did not, and both explain why. The one who waited came on a weekday evening and stood about for fifteen minutes — not in a queue, but because nobody had cleared the tables people had left. Everyone, she notes, was serving. The one who did not came at twenty past two on a Saturday, found the room nearly empty, and says as much: an odd hour, no wait, a table or two occupied. A third turned up early on a Saturday evening without booking, was seated at once, and counts herself lucky. Four posts tell you to book for a weekend evening, and one found it busy on a weekday too.
  • The posts disagree about whether you can book. One rang and reserved, having found no same-day slot online; one booked a room through Naver; two advise booking ahead because weekend evenings fill. And then an August 2026 post states flatly that there are no reservations — you ring and ask whether there is a table. Another writer did just that. It reads as though the online booking opens and closes by the day, but we could not confirm it. If you need the table, the phone is the sure thing — and one post adds that this is the moment to ask for a window or a room.
  • We counted eighteen of twenty-five. One post is not about this restaurant and six were not written by anyone who came. The excluded one is a 2021 trip itinerary whose five check-ins are all other places; this restaurant appears only in a suggested-reading link at the foot. The six all get something wrong. A "Haeundae best ten" piece invents a menu in a table — three named courses at sixty, eighty and a hundred and ten thousand won, when every person who actually ate here records fifty, seventy, a hundred or a hundred and fifty. Another turns the per-person course price into a price for five people. A third declares it unusual here to wrap the fish in white kimchi; no white kimchi appears anywhere in the eighteen. A "best ten chilled fish soups" post scrapes ten restaurants' listings wholesale, review counters and template names still in the text. The last two are a hotel's Mother's Day promotion and a round-up that claims first-hand visits and reproduces the online menu. Even the founding year goes wrong in that group — over thirty years, thirty-seven years — while four of the people who came write 1985.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship, and five declare that they paid — one with a photograph of the receipt. The other thirteen say nothing. But three of them share a press sheet. All three went up in August 2026, all three carry the same sentence about what the fifty-thousand course includes and where the wild fish begins, word for word, and all three print the break time twice, once wrongly — three o'clock in one line and half past three in the next. Somebody handed out a page. We kept all three, because each one's account of eating is its own — one gives her room number, one complains that nobody told her what the fish was, one ordered a grilled rockfish for a child. What divides a real visit from a commission is the eating, not the phrasing. What we did not count from those three is the parking, the valet and the break time. Separately, two posts record that writing a Naver review brings out a pan-fried fish cake, and three were given something free — a cake, or a crab. Their table may not have been quite the table of someone who had no review to write.
