Chiram Manjang

칠암만장 Chiram is the seaside village the house sits in (the name means 'seven rocks'), and manjang, written 鰻匠 on its Instagram, means 'eel master'.

Compiled from 23 blog posts read in fullSources →

A freshwater-eel and pot-rice house by Chiram harbour in Ilgwang, Gijang, across the road from the big bakery café Chiram Sagye. The main order is a set of eel grilled over charcoal in the kitchen, served with a pot of gondre rice and an individual tray of sides, at 30,000 won a head (60,000 for two); eel-topped pot rice is 29,000 won and beef flat-iron pot rice 21,000. Many posts finish by pouring water into the pot for scorched-rice tea. There is a two-storey main building plus an annex, and a yard with ducks, parrots, dogs and cats. We read 30 posts from 4 March to 28 October 2026; 24 describe an actual meal, 4 were about the Yeongdo branch or the café opposite and were set aside, and 2 are ranking lists.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Nine posts report waiting: 20 minutes at a weekend lunch; seven parties ahead and in 20 minutes after arrival on a Sunday lunch; 2-5 minutes behind one party at 3 pm on a Saturday; number six in line. On Chuseok day one family waited an hour and a half and another gave up on a 2-hour-plus wait. One arrived at 11:20, twenty minutes after opening, and there was already a line. A CatchTable kiosk by the door takes names, and you can join remotely in the app. One post walked straight in at a weekend lunch, but that visit was last year.
  2. Eighteen posts mention the animals kept in the yard: ducks, parrots, cats, a Jindo dog and geese. Most say they keep children busy during the wait, but some warn: a duck bit one writer, the parrot cage has a sign telling you to keep fingers out, and the Jindo barked hard at a small child who came close.
  3. Six posts mention private rooms; one family of four had a six-seat room to themselves, and one writer thought only rooms can be reserved. Three posts ate with a dog: one was shown to a room, one says small dogs may eat in the main hall (a dog sat at the next table and staff asked first if they minded), and one sat in the regular seating.
  4. Two posts point out that the eel comes fully grilled, so nobody cooks at the table and your clothes don't smell of smoke. Another notes it sits on a small brazier and stays warm. One post found the table cramped with the brazier and rice pot on it, making wraps awkward.

  1. Six posts order from a tablet or kiosk at the table; one adds that side-dish refills can be ordered the same way and arrive quickly.

The most ordered dish is minmul jangeo sutbul-gui jeongsik (민물장어 숯불구이 정식 세트) — 14 of 23 posts.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

Parking

15 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park15 of 23 posts

Fifteen posts say they parked at the restaurant's own lot. Six call it spacious; one disagrees: small for the crowds, with double-parking or street parking at weekends, and they had to come out mid-meal to move the car. Another notes the lot is behind the building and you have to loop around to reach it.

Eight posts were seated upstairs or mention the second floor. One says the upper floor is reached by an outside staircase, and another wanted the ground floor for a mother who struggles with stairs but was sent upstairs anyway. One family booked a ground-floor room and says there were no steps, so the grandmother managed easily. Two posts sat on the ground floor; nobody mentions a basement. If someone in your party finds stairs hard, ask for the ground floor in advance.

No post went in with a wheelchair or pushchair. One says there were no steps to a ground-floor room; nobody mentions the entrance step, a ramp or a lift. That means we don't know, not that there isn't one. The upper floor is up an outside staircase.

The only word on toilets is one post saying the men's is on the ground floor and the women's upstairs. Nobody says whether they are indoors or whether there is an accessible one.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Opinions on fishiness split four to one: four posts say none, one tasted a slight fishiness and, citing the price too, said they wouldn't return.
  • Six posts call it clean. One, however, describes flies and small insects around the table throughout the meal and a gnat crawling out of the kimchi. No other post lets us tell whether that was a one-off.
  • Space is disputed, four posts to two. One of the dissenters describes partitioned sections of about four tables each, set so close that you sit almost beside the next party.
  • Views on price split: two posts call it expensive, two call it reasonable, one says not cheap but fair. A meal runs 30,000 won a head for the set or 19,000-29,000 won for a pot rice, unchanged across the 2026 posts. One post felt the eel portion was small for the price.
  • All 18 posts that list hours give 11:00-20:00, with last orders at 19:00 in ten and 18:50 in one; most copied this from the Naver listing. Closing days conflict, three posts saying none and one saying Mondays, but another post ate there on a Monday afternoon. There is no formal break, but when ingredients run out the kitchen pauses: one party arriving at 2:30 pm was told to come back at 4:30, another waited 15 minutes at 3 pm. Two posts advise phoning ahead for a late lunch.
  • Two posts booked through Naver or CatchTable; one lists five booking slots (11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 17:00, 18:30) and says you pick the eel glaze in the booking note. Another tried a day ahead and couldn't book, and one thought only rooms take reservations, so what can be booked is unclear. Many posts give the same phone number, 0507-1325-7070.
  • No post arrived by bus or train; everyone came by car on a Gijang coastal drive, so we know nothing about getting there by public transport.
