Wonjo Jipbul Gomjangeo Gijang Oegajip

원조짚불곰장어 기장외가집 Wonjo jipbul gomjangeo means 'the original straw-fire hagfish' — the hagfish is seared over burning rice straw — and Gijang Oegajip means 'Grandma's house (on the mother's side) in Gijang'.

Compiled from 12 blog posts read in fullSources →

A hanok tucked down an alley in Gongsu village, Gijang, that sears hagfish over burning rice straw. Straw-fire, sauced and salt-grilled hagfish are all 30,000 won a portion, and single portions aren't sold, so pairs order the 63,000-won set of one straw-fire and one sauced. The straw-fire hagfish is cooked in an outdoor pit by the entrance and arrives ready to eat; the sauced one cooks beside your table and ends with 3,000-won fried rice. We read 16 posts dated 17 August to 22 October 2026; 12 describe an actual meal, the other 4 are listings and itineraries built from public information.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Single portions are not sold — three posts say so ('no single orders, two portions minimum'). That makes the 63,000-won set dearer than two portions bought separately, which one writer called a funny-sad setup; the same writer was allowed to order two straw-fire and one sauced instead.
  2. Writing a Naver receipt review earns a free extra — four posts mention it: either a half bowl of eel soup or a tasting plate of raw conger eel. Two posts got the soup, one the conger; one post gives the terms as at least two photos and 20 characters of text.
  3. One post came by bus from Haeundae, and another walked from nearby lodging. The directions via Osiria Station and the 185 bus are copied from the listing.
  4. Six posts went with family — in-laws, a family gathering, a party of seven, parents. Two brought children: in one the kids happily ate despite seeing the hagfish move; in the other a nearly three-year-old barely touched it. One post went with friends, one with a boyfriend.
2 more
  1. Four posts call the staff or owner kind; one was shown how to eat the dishes, another was steered through the menu. Three posts say staff cooked the sauced hagfish or the fried rice at the table.
  2. Three posts say there was no fishy smell. One writer passed on a warning that the straw-fire hagfish turns fishy once it cools — hearsay, so we did not count it.

Posts saying you can park5 of 12 posts

There is parking — five posts parked there or saw the lots. One counted room for three or four cars out front plus a lot behind, one parked in the 'second lot' at the back in the evening, and one was waved in by a parking attendant. The '7 in front, 20 behind' figure is copied from the listing.

Getting inside

No post says which floor the dining room is on or whether there are steps — only that it's a hanok entered through a door on the left down an alley.

Nobody wrote about a step at the door or wheelchair or stroller access. That means we don't know, not that it's absent.

None of the visit posts mention the toilets. 'Separate men's and women's toilets' appears only in a post copied from the listing.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 16 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-212 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Posts disagree on whether the sauced hagfish is spicy: one says it has a kick, two say it isn't very spicy at all.
  • No one reported waiting: one post walked in at 5 pm with two other tables, another arrived at opening on a Wednesday. But one post saw every seat fill by about 5 pm on a Saturday, and three booked ahead. How long a busy dinner wait runs, nobody wrote.
  • Prices are consistent: 30,000 won a portion for every hagfish dish. Two people on the set spend 63,000 won, or 66,000 with fried rice. One post called it expensive, quoting the writer's father: pricey and small, but tasty.
  • Opening hours: five visit posts give 11:00–21:00, one gives 10:30–21:00, and five agree on last orders at 20:00 — mostly in info boxes copied from the listing. No one mentions a closing day.
  • Five posts give the same phone number, 051-721-7098. Three posts booked through Naver Booking; none mention booking by phone.
  • Four of the 16 posts were written without a visit and weren't counted: a golf-package ad, a listing copied from the city's restaurant database, one copied from Naver Place, and a film-location itinerary built from Visit Busan material. Lines like 'since 1991' or 'Chow Yun-fat came in 2023' are the house's own claims or hearsay, and we didn't rely on them.
