Gijang Chonggak Daege

기장총각대게 Chonggak means an unmarried young man, a bachelor, and daege is snow crab, so the name reads 'Gijang Bachelor Snow Crab'.

Compiled from 27 blog posts read in fullSources →

A snow-crab house with a yellow sign inside Gijang Market. You pick a crab or king crab from the tanks out front, pay by weight, and it is steamed upstairs while you go down to a basement dining room, pay a 5,000-won-a-head table charge and wait. The crab arrives cut open and ready to eat; people finish with crab-shell fried rice (4,000 won each, with doenjang stew) and crab ramyeon (10,000 won). Bills in the posts: 170,000 won for 2.4 kg of crab for two, 230,000 won for a family of four, about 500,000 won for an extended family on king crab and bakdal crab. We read 30 posts from January 7 to October 9, 2026; one was about a different shop, and 27 describe a visit. Since June 2026 posts keep saying the shop will move to the new building across the lane, but none was written after a move.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Of 22 posts that discuss price, 15 say it is not expensive and none say it is. What they point to is the weighing: the basket's weight is zeroed out and its holes let the water drain. A February 2026 takeout post disagrees in part, saying 85,000 won a kilo is what she pays anywhere.
  2. 10 posts came with children. Several say the owner lifted a crab out of the tank for the child to touch, and two mention high chairs. On the table charge for kids, one post says preschoolers were free and another says primary-school children pay.
  3. 15 posts went with family and 3 with friends. Eight call the basement dining room large, and one mentions a private room.

Posts saying you can park17 of 27 posts

17 posts parked at the Gijang Market public lot; three give the rate as 200 won per 10 minutes, 8,000 won max per day. Many say the shop takes the parking fee off the bill, usually 2,000 won per car, 1,000 won in one post. One post waited at the lot entrance because it was full on a weekend.

Getting inside

In a basement14 of 27 posts
Toilet inside1 of 27 posts

You order at the tanks in the market lane and eat downstairs: 14 posts describe going down to a basement dining room. One says the stairway feels like the way into a basement karaoke bar; another notes non-slip pads on the sloped way down, which made it feel safe with children.

No one says whether a wheelchair or stroller can reach the basement room. Posts mention stairs and a sloped way down; none mentions a lift. That means no one wrote about it, not that there isn't one.

Only one post mentions the toilet, saying it is inside the dining room. Separate men's and women's toilets appear only in copied listing text, which we did not count.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • From June 2026 several posts say the shop is moving to a new building going up across the lane, but they disagree on when: mid-July, August, or still 'soon' in late August. Posts up to early September still describe the basement room, and nothing was written after a move, so everything here about the space is the old building.
  • Two posts got there by train or public transport: one, a paid post, says it is a five-minute walk from Gijang Station; the other just says they came by train. Other mentions of the station distance are copied listing text.
  • No post describes queuing. Many say the place was busy; one went early and found it quiet; none gives a wait time. The waits people mention are for steaming: 15–20 minutes, 20 minutes, and in one takeout post 30 minutes for snow crab and 50 for king crab.
  • Seventeen posts give the hours as 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily with last order at 8:30 p.m., but all except one copied them from the listing. None gives a closing day.
  • Many posts copy the number 0507-1407-5842; one gives 051-724-2848 instead. One post booked through Naver, and one phoned ahead to order takeout.
  • More than ten posts from July 7 to August 6, 2026 hit the same points in the same order: the yellow sign, drained-basket weighing, a substitute freebie when scallops are poor, and the August move. One discloses payment, one sponsorship, one a hosted visit; the rest say nothing. TV appearances and 'second generation' are the shop's own claims, repeated by bloggers, and we did not rely on them.
  • Crab is priced at the day's market rate, so it varies by post: snow crab ran 70,000–85,000 won a kilo in January–February 2026, 50,000 won in June and August, and 75,000 won for bakdal crab in September. Only the 5,000-won table charge is the same in every post.
