Chowon Bokguk

초원복국 Chowon means grassland or meadow, and bokguk is pufferfish soup.

Compiled from 19 blog posts read in fullSources →

A pufferfish restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, down a lane near the back gate of Pukyong National University. Soup runs 18,000 won (eunbok), 22,000 (milbok), 24,000 (kkachibok) and 45,000 (chambok), clear or spicy. It comes to the table in a pot and staff ladle it out; two posts say two pieces of fried pufferfish per person come free as a side. Groups of three or more can order a five-part course from 35,000 won per person. Many posts retell that this is the house where the 1992 'Chowon Bokjip' political scandal took place. We read 30 posts from April to October 2026; 4 were about other branches or a neighbouring shop, and 19 describe actually eating here.

Rows without a count: 7 of 11 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Fried pufferfish comes up more than anything else: ten posts call it crisp. One says it arrived hot rather than merely warm, straight from the fryer, and five diners ordered extra beyond the free pieces that come with the soup.
  2. Expect to wait at lunch, especially at weekends. Four posts say they waited: about 20 minutes in June 2026, about 10 minutes at a holiday lunch, a queue at 11:30 on a Sunday, and a short wait on a rainy day. The holiday visitor noted that people wait outside, which can be hot in summer.
  3. Six posts went with family, often with parents. Six also describe coming back after earlier visits. One post noticed a high chair for babies.

Parking

Posts saying you can park6 of 19 posts

There is a lot in front. Six posts parked there or describe it, and two mention a valet attendant. One post put it at about 14 spaces: room to spare just after 11 on a weekday, full by noon with cars lining the road. A holiday-lunch visitor found the front lot small and parked on the street.

Getting inside

Second floor8 of 19 posts
In a basement1 of 19 posts
Toilet inside1 of 19 posts

The restaurant spreads over several floors. Eight posts were seated on, or went up to, the second floor or higher. Four say there are three floors, one mentions a basement level ('basement, first and second floors all full'), and one says there are only two. Floors are divided into room-like sections with several tables; one diner stressed these are not private rooms.

Only one post mentions a basement level, and posts disagree on how many floors there are, so we do not know the seating on each. One family asked for a ground-floor table for a grandmother and waited a little longer for it.

No post mentions an entrance step, wheelchair or stroller access, or a lift. One mentions taking the stairs to upper floors. That means nobody wrote about it, not that access is absent.

One post says there is a toilet right at the top of the stairs on the second floor; another guessed there is one on the stairs at each floor. Nobody mentions separate men's and women's toilets or an accessible one.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 7 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Two posts found the service lacking: one says waiting customers on a Sunday were told, in effect, to leave if they didn't want to wait; another, on a busy day, was refused a switch from clear to spicy soup and found the staff curt. No post singles out the staff as friendly.
  • Posts note it sits between Kyungsung Univ.–Pukyong Univ. and Namcheon subway stations, but nobody describes arriving by subway or bus. Some arrived by car.
  • Twelve posts give opening hours, all but one copied from an info block. Most agree: weekdays 09:00–21:00 with a 15:00–17:00 break (last order 20:10), weekends and holidays 09:00–20:00 with no break (last order 19:10). One April 2026 post alone gives a 07:00 opening. One diner saw the room empty out for the weekday break.
  • Prices are consistent across posts that copied the menu; the cheapest meal is eunbok soup at 18,000 won. Four posts list kkachibok at 24,000 won, but one October 2026 post lists fresh kkachibok at 26,000 — we cannot tell if that is a separate item or a rise. Two posts found it expensive; one called the course reasonably priced.
  • Seven posts give the same phone number, 051-628-3935. Nobody describes booking ahead, so we do not know whether reservations are taken.
